Therapy Through the College Transition

Leaving for college is one of the biggest transitions in a young person’s life, and too often it’s also the moment therapy ends. Most therapists are licensed in only one state, so when a student moves away for school, they have to stop treatment and start over with someone new.

Sarah Kencel, LCSW is licensed in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, and registered to provide telehealth in Florida and Colorado. Teens who work with Sarah in Old Greenwich can keep working with her by video after they leave for school: the same therapist, the same skills and no gap in care.

Why continuity matters

The first year of college brings new independence along with new pressures: academic demands, a new social world, irregular sleep and distance from the supports at home. For many students it’s the time when anxiety, depression and emotional overwhelm are most likely to flare. Students who already know their DBT and CBT skills, and have a therapist who already knows them, are better prepared to handle it.

How it works

  • Secure video sessions from a dorm or apartment

  • Scheduling built around classes, exams and breaks

  • In-person sessions in Old Greenwich when students are home on break

  • A clear plan for what to do if a crisis happens on campus

Planning ahead

For high school juniors and seniors, the months before college are a good time to build skills for independence: managing emotions, time and relationships without parents close by. Sarah helps families plan the transition, including how therapy will continue and what supports to set up on campus.

A note for parents

Once your child turns 18, their privacy rights change. Sarah can help your family agree up front on how you’ll stay informed, with your student’s consent.

Already in college?

Sarah also works with college students and young adults who are new to her practice. If you attend school in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Florida or Colorado, you can start therapy by video, with in-person sessions in Old Greenwich when you’re home.
